Pool Hopping around Iceland

Pool Hopping around Iceland

Geothermal water is one of the primary commodities in Iceland. We use it for heating our homes and offices in the areas where hot water is in abundance. Sometimes the excess water from the ovens will be used to heat the pavements. Geothermal steam also runs the turbines in the few power stations which have been built on suitable high-temperature areas. In some places, particularly in the highlands, one can also find natural hot pools and rivers which can be used for bathing.

Swimming is among the favorite activities for a large part of the Icelandic population. From the time Icelandic Icelandic children start their education they learn to swim and get to appreciate the luxury of having this natural resource available. Since swimming is part of the general education one can find swimming pools in all towns and next to countryside schools which quite often are used as summer hotels as well.  In most cases, these are outdoor pools. Jacuzzis or hot tubs are an essential part of the swimming pool area, where people can just relax, exchange ideas on current issues, discuss politics or plain gossip. In many pools there are steam baths next to the outdoor pool, also available for visitors. Most of the larger ones also have waterslides which delight the younger generation particularly.

Our Terms & Conditions

In this tour package, we have included a visit to two well know geothermal spa lagoons in Iceland. We would like you to share with us the clean water and the crisp, fresh air, and their combined health effects on body and soul. We will provide suggestions for swimming pools or natural hot pools along your route around Iceland, situated in the vicinity of interesting sights.

The itinerary will be tailor-made and can take into account your wishes regarding the highlights, special interests and any additional activities along the way.
You can choose to stick to the main roads which will not require the use of a 4WD vehicle. However, if you decide to visit any part of the highlands (summer months only!), you will need to rent a 4WD type of car which is suitable for highland roads.

Note: Icelandic swimming pools adhere to a high standard of cleanliness. The pools are less chlorinated than in many other countries, and they are fed by a continuous flow of natural hot water. Almost all swimming pools in Iceland are outdoor.

To maintain a high standard of cleanliness, all swimming pools require that every guest showers without a swimsuit and washes with the soap provided in the shower room, before entering the pool. All pools have separate lockers and showers for men and women. Icelanders are not shy to shower in front of others, therefore, the pools usually only have a large room with several showers for men and another one for women.
