Day 1: Reykjavík – Keflavík
Upon your arrival at Keflavík international airport, you will be transported to your accommodation in Reykjavík with the flybus.

Day 2: (ca. 190 km)
In the morning you will get a rental car pick up at the hotel and set off to explore the sights of the “Golden Circle.” You will start by visiting Þingvellir National Park which is a great lava arena in a rift valley and the site of the oldest parliament, “the Althing” and Lake Þingvallavatn with a view of surrounding mountains. From there you head to the Geysir geothermal area – have your camera ready for one of the geysers, Strokkur as it spouts a column of hot water. Lastly, you will visit Gullfoss waterfall (the Golden Waterfall) before turning in for the night.

Day 3: (ca. 200 km)
Today you will drive the gravel highland road of the Kjölur where you will have views of the Langjökull glacier, Mt Kerlingarfjöll, and Hofsjökull glacier. On the way, you will visit Hveravellir hot spring area with steam vents and warm pools where you can bathe in the natural pool which is cooled down by the fresh water. There you also have a chance for a hike on the trail of the outlaws who hid out in this area once upon a time. When moving onwards, you will see the artificial lakes which are part of the power station Blanda and cover a significant portion of the northern end of this route.

Day 4: (ca. 280 km)
On the journey today you will explore Skagafjörður and the glacial valleys of Öxnadalur and Hörgárdalur. You will also visit Akureyri – the university town often referred to as the capital of North Iceland. Akureyri has many points of interest to explore. There are the charming wooden houses in the old part of the town, the northernmost botanical garden, the church – a landmark that towers over the downtown area and many interesting museums, galleries, and cafés.
After you explore Akureyri, you will head and visit Goðafoss waterfall on your way to the fascinating volcanic area of Lake Mývatn. The area is rich in birdlife, and the nature is a sight to see. There are lava fields, volcanic craters, and mountains, pseudo craters, lava rock formations, solfatara field with boiling mud pits and roaring steam vents. At the end of the day, you can have a relaxing bath in pleasantly warm water of the Nature Baths geothermal lagoon while enjoying the fantastic views over the area.

Day 5: (ca. 320 km)
Today you will drive through Bárðardalur valley along Skjálfandafljót river. You will see Aldeyjarfoss waterfall with its impressive wall of basalt formations as well as Hrafnabjargafoss. You will make your way along the Sprengisandur desert highland road and visit the geothermal area of Laugafell where you have a chance to bathe in a natural warm pool. On your way, there are views of glaciers (Hofsjökull, Tungnafellsjökull, Vatnajökull), and several unbridged streams and rivers to cross.

Day 6: (ca. 230 km)
Your drive today will take you along scenic highland roads to Landmannalaugar, a geothermal area with hot springs and a chance to hike through the colorful landscape and bathe in the warm stream. You will come across the Eldgjá rift, one of the most significant fissures in the world, before reaching the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Day 7: (ca. 190-260 km):
Today you will visit the village Vík with its black, sandy beach which stretches as far as you can see and a view of the Reynisdrangar stack. You can visit the bird sanctuary at Dyrhólaey and drive beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier under which rests the infamous volcano of the same name. You can visit the Skógar folk museum and view the Skógafoss waterfall and Seljalandsfoss waterfall while enjoying views of the Vestmannaeyjar Islands and Mt. Hekla (weather permitting) on your way to Reykjavik.

Day 8: Reykjavík –Keflavík (ca. 50 – 70 km)
Now you will drive to Keflavík international airport, drop off the rental car and check-in for the flight back home. If your departure is in the afternoon or evening, then you have the chance to explore the Reykjanes peninsula or visit the Blue Lagoon for a final relaxing time in the pleasantly warm geothermal water.
